Crueton.com's interview with the one, the only,
The following interview was conducted via e-mail on Sept. 7, 2000. I didn't want to ask the "same old boring questions", so I tried to mix it up a bit, so we'd all get a better understanding of the man behind the drums! Randy will be answering the questions a few at a time, and he seems to be answering them in no set order, so check back for updates. Here's the interview. Crueton.com asks: 1. What are your opinions on UFOs and extra-terrestrials? Are you a beleiver? Randy's answer: Of course I believe in UFOs. After all,we are living proof that extra-terrestials do exist. We live as far out in outer space as anybody else,so we are,in effect, what we are so afraid of! We are the extra-terrestials! We are a scary fuckin`bunch of earthling`s! If I saw us coming, I`d get the guns & ammo & run for cover because we as a race do some very scary shit! No wonder them aliens don`t want us to know they`re here yet. But if they`v got any good bands, chicks & free beer, then COME ON DOWN! Alien beer! What a concept! What a great name for a green bottle of beer!
Crueton.com asks: 2. What religion are you? Were you raised in a religious home? Do you go/still go to church at all? Randy's answer: I kant smell eethur, bekuzz i`m uh wurs spellur than sixx 2. Az 4 my ruligus bee leafs. well i can oonlee say that 2 eech his or her own! I wuz raised in uh house of belief in gawd,& i must say it gave me uh strong sense uf values, but didn`t help muh spellin much. I wuz fortunate to have a great ma & pa & some kick ass sisters 2. My church of choice iz in my heart & i go thar evoree day. az long az i`m on m`way!
Crueton.com asks: 3. What style of drumming is more difficult: A flashy, jazz style such as Neil Peart from Rush, or a more laid-back, disiplined style like Phil Rudd from AC/DC? Randy's answer: I personally love Phil Rudd`s style of drumming way more than Mr.Peart`s. It`s not about flash or discipline. It`s all about feel. You know it,when you feel it creepin` up your spine!....there is nothing more difficult than trying to figure out which is more difficult. Know what I mean? In other words,I would give my right arm to be ambedextrious. Now, if I didn`t spell that correctlly,& you can, please let me know.
Crueton.com asks: 4. Are you the type that spends money as you make it, or are you very business-minded when it comes to your cash, like investing? What was your best investment? Randy's answer: I`m a little bit of both. I have spent money on the most foolish things. But when I think back about it I really wonder how foolish my motives really were. Some may say that I was careless with my money & I am the first to admit that perhaps, I was. But to tell you the truth, I have no regrets about how, or where, or what I spent my hard earned cash on beacause I have had some of the most magical, mystical & out of control memories that have no monetary value, or way of being measured in $`s. In other words, I wouldn`t trade my experiences for all the gold in Mr.T`s safety depositbox! Or Bill Gates either. My best investment is my imagination, because it has never failed to bring me my greatest returns! Crueton.com asks: 5. Any chance of working with Zakk Wylde and /or Ozzy Ozbourne in the near future? Randy's answer: #5.There is always a chance of working w/those guys anytime, anywhere. They were great to work with in the past & if that is any indication then it would only make sense to do that which was succesful, again. But things don`t always work out that way ,so who knows for sure?Time will tell...
Crueton.com asks: 6. Who do you plan on voting for in the presidential election, and why? Are you a registered voter? Randy's answer: #6. At the time I was going to vote for Gore, not because I thought he was so great, but only because I thought he was the lesser of the two evils which is a shitty thing when you think about it,but what other choices do we have at this point in time?Look what happened...we got a dork for pres who didn`t even win the majority vote! What a pathetic situation.Anyway I ended up not voting because I got too sick to get outta bed,so I just watched the whole circus on tv & puked my guts out.
Crueton.com asks: 7. You've play with at least 2 musical legends: Ozzy and Crue. Are there any other musical goals you have set for yourself? Randy's answer: Answer 2 # 7.....Yes,I would love to dance naked in front of a hive of african killer bees that have Back Street Boys t-shirts on,then my thundering force field would eliminate any attack they threw my way. Then my Korn t-shirt wearing death core bro`s would stare them into the wussy submission they can`t ignore. That is the musical goal I have set for myself.May God help me on my sacred mission.
Crueton.com asks: 8. What have you been doing this summer, while recovering from your surgery? Randy's answer: After being sliced straight down the middle I tried to wish myself well.I totally convinced myself that I was ok & ready to do the summer tour w/the Crue. This was only 2 wks.after my surgery!I wanted so bad to get out & tour & play & just hang w/my bros in the band. But in reality,I was not in any way physically healed enough to go out & play a 90+ minute show.I was seriously bummed. But it was the right thing to do,no matter how much I wanted it to happen.I went to see the show at the Universal Amphitheater & I must admit Samantha did a great job & I felt proud of her because it ain`t no cake walk playin` w/one of the hardest most physically demanding bands in the world! But I was wanting so bad to be up there poundin`& rockin` my ass off. After accepting my reality I went to work on getting into shape & loading my guns to get back in the saddle.I have a group that I`ve been giggin`around el-lay with called "Azul",which is a total departure from the slammin`rock most people know me for. It`s a flamenco, mystical, gypsy trance & tribal sort of thing.I`m spanish (mom`s side)& I grew up with that kind of music. My father was a guitar player & a graet singer in spanish & mexican music,so I have always had that love for Latin,Gypsy & Afro-Cuban & even Mariachi.Believe it or not,all those different kinds of music had a deep influence on me & how I play today. So I kept myself in playin shape doing gigs w/Azul at the Cat Club on Sunset every Sat.night.I have also been running,& working out,so when The Crue goes to Japan & Australia I`ll be cocked & loaded & ready to blow this shit up!Throughout my ordeal,Nikki,Mick & Vince have been totally supportive & always let me know that when I was healed & ready, they will be there ready to get back to doing what we do best.ROCK & FUCKIN`ROLL MUTHA FUCKAHS!
Crueton.com asks: 9. Are you a sports fan, if so, do you have any favorite professional teams or players? (In any sport). Randy's answer: #9,#9,#9....I dig all kinds of competition.Just like music, sports elevates us to new levels of achievment. My favorite athlete of all time would have to be Jim Thorpe. He kicked everybody`s ass in the olympics & then was stripped of his medals becausae he made a couple of bucks playing sandlot baseball. He was posthumousley given back his medals, but the important thing is what he achieved for America & Native Americans everywhere. My other Main Man is Muhamed Ali,for the obvious reasons. My 3rd hero is Ozzy, just because he is one of a kind & can do jumping jacks on stage while screaming, spittin` & raisin` hell for 2 hrs.
Crueton.com asks: 10. When it comes to recording (drums), what format do you prefer? Analog, digital, etc. Randy's answer: Hey kids, here`s my answer 2 #10.I prefer recording drums in the analog format, but that does not mean I would only do it that way.The technology today is getting so good, but we must never forget where the creativity comes from. All these wonderfull gadgets & toy`s are only tools to further express our creative abilities.Technology is a wonderfull thing in the hands & imagination of an enlightened artist.Better moose traps are gonna make better moose hunters. And moose ribs are very tasty if the chef knows how to cook em.
Crueton.com asks: 11. Describe your perfect Utopian society, give details! ;^) Randy's answer: ....My perfect utopia would be the way I saw the world the moment I was born.Eye`s wide open & pure as innocence could ever be.When you look into a child`s eye`s you see the beauty of not knowing the world that they eventually will know.If that feeling could last forever & we could remember how amazing & wonderfull it was,we could live in a perpetual state of utopia forever....until there was a grinch,or some kind of earthquake,or driveby shooting,or some stupid way of life we learn from all the angry people that need to proove that they need more than they`ve been given.Aint no way we will know utopia until that moment we stare death in the face,& it brings us back to what it`s like to be born again.God or whatever you choose to call the power that makes us possible will give & will take away. Our time here is a gift & a chance to make a difference for those who follow. We must be greatefull to whoever inspires us to be great.OK?....I LOVE YOU ALL....
Crueton.com asks: 12. Do you play any other instruments besides drums? Randy's answer: #12. I started out in music playing trumpet.I played for about 4 yrs.before I found my true calling & switched to drums.I dabble on guitar, but I have a long way to go before I make my world debut!
Crueton.com asks: 13. When you are writing a song, do you build it around the rhythm? Around a melody? Just lyrics first, then add music later? Randy's answer:Hey you twisted addicted, inflicted victims of the music tribe we all belong too. Here are my thoughts on numero #13.There are no rules to writing a song.I have had the most incredible songs come to me in dreams.Unfortunatley I didn`t wake up & sing the melody or just the idea into my tape recorder, which I keep right next my bed w/my teddy bear pillow & 357 Magnum.Ideas are like elusive creatures that when you get one, you better put it down because they will dissapear in an instant. Some of the best work I everhad the pleasure to share was writing "No More Tears" W/Ozzy,Zakk,Mike,John Purdell,Duane Barron & Lemmy. Some songs like "No More Tears"just grew out of a bass riff that MikeInez just started playing at rehearsal one day, then Zakk came in w/that atomic riff from hell that he`s so good at doing & John Sinclair just started foolin` around W/some keyboard ideas. We never finished it that day but we were jammin it in the recuording studio & just hit a brick wall.I came up w/the chorus, but it needed a riff from hell to make it great.Ozzy was boozin``back then & was passed out on the couch in the control room.We kept playin`it over & over but nothing seemed to work. Then out of nowhere Ozzy sat up & just started singing this heavy riff that just made the song magic. Some songs are written with the band just jammin in the studio, but we would get a lot of great ideas from jammin at sound checks which we did everyday for every gig w/Ozzy.The sound man always recorded sound checks just in case. With Motley "New Tattoo" was already pretty much written & just needed some arranging & polishing the songs.Nikki is one prolific fucker,& he is just a creative machine that turns out nonstop ideas day & night!I sure miss jammin` w/all the afore mentioned people....oh yeah I forgot about Mick Mars.He is the most rock solid riff master of all time,& in my book right ther w/Tony Iommi.Damn I miss playin`.Gotta get well first & foremost. Can`t do shit or play to my level unless I`m 1000%.And I shall be my freinds. Please just bear W/me because I have so much inside & it will be my mission to heal & do what I love & do best.BY the way,I also paint & express my soul through art.If you want to check it out go to fcukingcontagious.net . Love & luck to you all.Until the next answer E-you later.
Crueton.com asks: 14. Can we expect you to introduce any "mariachi" influences into any future Crue songs??? Randy's answer: NO
Crueton.com asks: 15. What is a typical day in your life like (when you are not on the road or recording an album?) Randy's answer:
#15.My typical days until recently weren`t very typical because I was
being treated for cancer. That sucked but I`m now cancer free so all that
nasty shit I went through was worth it.Now I wake up around 7 or 8
depending on when my dog licks my
Here's are some silly questions, just to lighten the mood a bit.
Crueton.com asks: 16. BREASTS: 1) Real 2)Fake 3)as long as there's two of them it's all good! Randy's answer: Most definitely real, but not real big just the perfect hand-cupful. Don`t dig the big round solid as a rock slut look. They're more like weapons than instuments of smooth sensuality. Crueton.com asks: 17. Type of woman: 1)Slutty, willing to do anything 2) Classy, but a freak in the bedroom 3) Play hard to get, but pay off when ya get them! 4) A total prude. Randy's answer: I like a woman w/ all those attributes rolled into one!....turns me on bigtime!
Crueton.com asks: 18. What is the funniest untrue rumor you've heard about yourself or Motley Crue? Randy's answer: #18.Well this may not sound funny, but to me it was.I heard rumors to the effect that I wasn`t going to make it & was dying.Well I maybe felt like I was dying & I looked like Ghandi with tattoos but I never ,ever thought I wasn`t going to make it!When I heard that shit it just made my resolve all the stronger just to prove to those dorks that they were wrong.
Crueton.com asks: 19. Was the nurse that gave you sponge baths in the hospital a hottie? Randy's answer: #19.The nurses were all angels in my eyes. There was one in particular that was most definitely a "hottie".She was beautiful & sweet & made my day whenever she came around & her name was Angela which I thought was appropiate.
Crueton.com asks: 20. Do you have any tattoos in "strange" places? If so, send photographs please (hahahahaha) Randy's answer: #20.There is no such thing as a "strange" place to get a tattoo anymore.I do have some in more "sensitive" areas though, like my back & under my forearms. My next tatts are going to be on my calves.Well I think I finally got all yer questions.Sorry it took so long.Have a nice day...RC
